On a more personal note

I've been bad about getting "fun" posts up lately.  So...here's one that's less than fun, on the chance that someone who happens by here may be interested.

A few weeks ago, my wife Laura and I had to let go of our dog Sunny.  Laura sometimes manages her grief in these instances by writing a bit of the dog's story, and she has done so for Sunny.

I'll note that there's a good chance that some who read it, who may or may not be involved in animal rescue, will disagree with the series of decisions we made.  That's okay.  The rescue community is filled with passionate people who are sure of very specific convictions, and I know I can't agree with all of them.  Hopefully, the story gives a little window into the world of ups and downs that accompanies a girl like Sunny.

  1. I grew up with dogs -- not in a Tarzan kind of way -- and losing them was so painful that I long ago decided I wouldn't have any pets of my own any more. I wouldn't be able to deal with an animal getting old or unwell or being injured or any of that, let alone making the decision you and Laura had to make with Sunny. I'm sorry for your loss.

  2. Heartbreaking, yet heroic in the lengths you went to to show Sunny she was loved and cared for. As a relative newcomer to the world of dog parenting, Laura's beautiful and honest story of Sunny has reduced me to tears. Stay strong.

    1. Thanks so much, Tim. I do truly feel that Laura is heroic in what she gives of herself, and I'm lucky to tag along and experience it. (I'm always really happy to read your tales of Alice, by the way. Glad you have found each other!)

  3. We have a female "run-away"dog...cannot really afford to keep her up.. (She will not eat dry food) she was a long-haired well groomed family pet... cannot find her owners... (more concerned with how bad the doctor's report on my heart will be next week (we had a CT Scan... Heart not doing so well)...
We love dogs (often more that People) So, for now we are trying to handle everything...
Our best to you and your wife, good Sir...
Sorry... we could not bring ourself to read her Story...
We still haven't gotten over my last two lost dogs... though do have the offspring of my last dog... he was raised by the owner of the dog he mated with... so, the new dog, "Casper"... was not "socialized" and a bit "wild"... he claws up my arms when we go to pet him...
and knocks us down often... We have to keep him chained up outside.... all my life we have always had an "inside" dog... we hate that we cannot do the same for Casper...
